Ocean Network Express launches apprenticeship programme “SAIL” in Europe

ONE recently commenced their new Shipping Apprenticeship & International Learning (SAIL) programme aimed at secondary school, college and university leavers based in Europe. At the beginning of the year, 10 apprentices from across Europe were flown to Germany to commence their induction.

The exciting scheme is designed to train up young people in the various aspects of the shipping business where they will gain experience in a wide range of agency functions including Customer Service, Finance, Sales and Operations. In addition to work experience and department specific training the apprentices will undertake courses and workshops covering topics such as international trade, containerization and customs. They will also have the chance to work abroad in different departments, so they can truly experience working at an international level in a global company.

The programme will run for 2 years with the intention of annually recruiting apprentices. At present the scheme is available in France, Italy, Poland, Portugal, Spain and the UK. ONE hopes to extend the scheme to further countries in Europe and Africa for the next intake.

ONE’s Talent and Development Manager, Janet van Heijningen says “ONE is proud to be offering this programme to build talent and invest in young people for the future of our organisation. The combination of on the job training, international experience and formal training provides an excellent foundation for anybody looking to pursue a career in the shipping industry. We are looking forward to helping our apprentice’s grow and progress over the next 2 years.”
