SRX Service – Industrial Action in the South African Ports

Dear Valued Customer,

Yesterday we have received from the operator of the South African container terminals, Transnet Port Terminals (TPT), a declaration of 'Force Majeure' due to anticipated strike action by recognized unions, SATAWU and UNTU.

The UNTU strike action commenced yesterday, 6th October, and brought to a halt the operations at the TPT managed container terminals in the Eastern- and Western Cape (Cape Town, Port Elizabeth, Coega, East London).
At Durban, operations were still continuing during yesterday, Thursday 6th October 2022, but at a scaled down level. Reason for Durban remaining operational yesterday may be related to the fact that in Durban a substantial part of the terminal labour are members with SATAWU which union have called for a strike only as from Monday 10th October.

We sincerely hope that during the coming hours and days an agreement can be reached between Transnet and the Unions. However, at this point in time it is unclear how long this strike action will last. Contingency plans are being looked into however it is clear that, as long as the strike action continues, the impact on our services calling South Africa will be severe.

We continue monitoring the situation and will keep you updated on the developments.
We apologize for any inconvenience and appreciate your understanding in this regard.
